USA MXGP AT GLEN HELEN, SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFOFRNIA

Next stop on the GP Calendar of last weekend was the famous MX track of Glen Helen at San Bernardino, California USA. Getting there means 9000km's of travel, which is quite a contrast compared to the 20km which it took the team to arrive at the previous Valkenswaard Grand Prix. Glen Helen proved quite a challenge, especially during sunday morning's first MX2 race when the track was muddy after heavy rainfall earlier.
The track had converted in to a single race-line layout, with treacherous and technically very demanding sections. Jordi Tixier had adapted to the track well by setting 7th qualifying on saturday and securing 13th positon during sunday's first race. Joel Roelants dropped back to 17th during the first stage of the first race while he battled to find the right lines. Once Joel got in to a better rythm he clawed back 3 places, passing Lupino in the last lap to finish in14th.
MX2 Rookie Pascal Rauchenecker was in 18th position during the entire first race. Somewhat intimidated by the superfast layout and US-style mega-jumps, Pascal did not perform at his best but still he managed to keep KTM collegue Marvin Musquin at bay. Musquin did his first GP after his return from injury.

When race two started, track conditions had improved from muddy to moist, and with an overall temperature of 19deg.C racing conditions were optimal. Joel Roelants completed the first lap in 11th with Jordi Tixier following right behind in 12th. The Roelants-Tixier duo remained close together almost the entire race when in the final stages Joel pulled a gap to finish 9th, soon followed by Jordi in 10th position who manged to keep Kullas behind him.
Meanwhile Pascal Rauchenecker put in an excelent performance by claiming13th place from start to finish. In between races teammanager Jacky Martens has had a good talk with Pascal which had helped him loosen up his nerves which dramatically improved his riding style.

Racing in the US and especially at Glen Helen is totally different from what we are used to in Europe, especially as a rookie you can get easily overwhelmed by the whole experience. The layout of the track is "wide open" all the time, with extreme jumps which exceed far from what we normally see in Europe, so the whole US experience can be a bit overwhelming, especially when you are a rookie like Pascal or Jordi. Taking in account all these circumstances we did well over here. Now we travel from California to Brazil for next weekend's GP"

De afspraak op de GP kalender van afgelopen weekeneinde was Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Californie, USA. Om er te komen moest het team 9000 km reizen, een schril contrast met de 20km naar de GP van Valkenswaard zo'n twee weken eerder. Glen Helen bleek een pittige uitdaging, vooral tijdens de eerste reeks MX2 op zondag toen zware regenval eerder het circuit had veranderd in een modderpoel. De baan had hierdoor maar één goed berijdbare lijn die verrraderlijk was en technisch erg veeleisend. Jordi Tixier bleek zich het best te hebben aangepast, met als resultaat een 7e plaats tijdens de qualificatie op zaterdag en een 13e positie score tijdens de eerste reeks op zondag.
Tijdens de beginfase van de eerste reeks was Joel Roelants was teruggevallen naar een 17e plaats. Nadat Joel gaandeweg de wedstrijd een beter ritme te pakken kreeg wist hij 3 plaatsen terug te komen, daarbij Lupino in de laatste ronde nog voorbij stekend, om uiteindelijk als 14e te finishen.
MX2 nieuwkomer Pascal Rauchenecker bleek ietwat geïntimideerd door de supersnelle layout van de baan gecombineerd met amerikaanse mega-sprongen.
Hierdoor kwam hij niet volledig tot zijn recht maar desondanks wist hij KTM collega Marvin Musquin achter zich te houden en als 18e te finishen. Musquin overigens maakte in Glen Helen zijn rentree na een slepende blessure.

Voorafgaand aan de tweede reeks was de baan vrijwel opgedroogd en met een temperatuur van 19gr.C waren de race omstandigheden ditmaal wel optimaal.
Na de eerste doorkomst lag Joel Roelants door in 11e positie met in zijn achterwiel Jordi Tixier. Het tandem Roelants-Tixier bleef kort bij elkaar gedurende de hele wedstrijd, echter op het laatst moest Tixier lossen waardoor Roelants met een kleine voorsprong als 9e werd afgevlagd. Tixier wist op zijn beurt Kullas nog van het lijf te houden om kort na Roelants als 10e te finishen. Tegelijkertijd zette Pascal Rauchenecker een mooie prestatie neer door van start tot finish de 13e positie te bezetten. Voorafgaand aan de tweede reeks had teammanager Jacky Martens Pascal apart genomen en de eerste reeks goed met hem doorgesproken. Hierdoor kon Pascal meer onstpannen aan de 2e reeks beginnen, iets wat zijn rijstijl en prestatie duidelijk ten goede kwam.
Commentaar van teammanager Jacky Martens;" Allereerst wil ik iedereen van JSTAR-JDRMotorsports KTM bedanken voor hun gastvrijheid en geweldige ondersteuning tijdens ons verblijf op Glen Helen Raceway. Dit heeft voor ons een groot verschil gemaakt, waarvoor mijn hartelijke dank! Ook speciale dank aan Dirk Temmerman (oprichter DT1 air filters) voor zijn continue ondersteunng en hulp tijdens ons verblijf aldaar. Al vele seizoenen vertrouwt ons team op de topprodukten van DT1, het zijn zonder twijfel de beste luchtfilters op dit moment in de motorcross GP. Het racen in de USA en speciaal op Glen Helen is totaal anders dat dat we gewend zijn in Europa. Als nieuweling zoals Pascal of Jordi kan je dan al snel overweldigd raken door de hele ervaring. Alle omstandigheden meegerekend hebben we goed gepresteerd in Glen Helen. Nu reizen we door naar Brazillië voor de GP van het aankomende weekeinde".
